Forward Group is proud to announce that team member Justine Goodwin has successfully completed the Dementia Jersey Ecuador Trek. This demanding high-altitude challenge was undertaken to raise funds and awareness for the island’s dementia charity.
The expedition saw participants trek across Cotopaxi National Park and the iconic Andina Route, covering steep ascents, unpredictable weather and significant altitude. The route featured rugged terrain, deep valleys, winding mountain paths and rapidly changing conditions.
After a period of acclimatisation in Quito, Justine began the trek through Cotopaxi National Park before progressing along the Andina Route, passing through Sigchos, Isinlivi and Chugchilan. Despite the physical difficulty, she remained focused and determined throughout.
During the final days of the challenge the group reached the top of the Quilotoa volcano crater where they were greeted by a local woman serving hot coffee over an open fire. They then followed part of the crater rim to the town of Quilotoa, meeting local families tending their sheep and llamas along the way. The next morning, under perfectly clear skies, the team descended into the crater itself. After a refreshing swim in the crater lake they completed an arduous climb back to the top, pushing through the steep incline and heat to finish the final section of the trek.
Speaking about her experience, Justine said:
“The trek pushed me further than I expected, physically, mentally and emotionally. The altitude, the steep climbs and the long days were a real challenge, but the views, the friendships and the purpose behind it made every step worthwhile. Knowing I was doing this for Dementia Jersey kept me going on the hardest days. I am incredibly proud to have completed it.”
Following the conclusion of the organised trek, Justine continued her travels in the Galapagos, climbing another volcano and exploring the unique wildlife and landscapes of the islands. Although not part of the fundraising challenge, this provided a memorable and fitting end to an extraordinary journey.
Debbie Du Feu, Director at Forward Group, said:
“We are incredibly proud of Justine and everything she has achieved. Taking on a challenge of this scale requires strength, resilience and a huge amount of heart. Justine has shown all of those qualities throughout her trek. Her commitment to supporting Dementia Jersey will make a real difference to people and families in our community.”
The Dementia Jersey Ecuador Trek is one of the charity’s key annual fundraising challenges. It helps fund essential services including community outreach, support groups and educational programmes.
Justine is continuing her fundraising and hopes to personally raise more than £3,000 for Dementia Jersey. All further donations are gratefully received.
